Adelaide 36ers stars Isaac Humphries and Sunday Dech recently visited a Spectres Australia training session in the lead up to NBL Pride Round on Friday night.
Humphries spoke to the group about his journey after coming out in November 2022 and Dech provided some training drills for the team.
Spectres Australia is a fun, vibrant, and premier LGBTQIA+ inclusive basketball community which began their journey in 2001.
Since those humble beginnings, Spectres Australia Basketball Association have grown into a national network of clubs in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney.
“When I made my decision to come out, I did so not only to live a life out of hiding, but also to help make basketball a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space for the community,” Humphries said.
“As this round continues to evolve, I hope everyone is feeling more comfortable to be themselves around the sport.”

Over the past 23 years, the Spectres have proudly become a beloved and influential part of the Australian and international LGBTQIA+ sporting and basketball communities.
Spectres Australia’s Adelaide president Asad Safi said the group was very grateful to have the 36ers along and great to see the growth in this space.
“We met the team last year (leading into Pride Round) and have formed a great relationship, which is helping to increase awareness and promote inclusivity at all levels of play, participation and community,” Safi said.
Dech also spoke about the importance of being an active ally and the significance of education, learning more in this space and promoting positive change by calling out exclusive behaviours.
The Spectres team will form a guard of honour for the team before Friday night’s home game against Brisbane Bullets, while also being part of game night activations.
